FEDERATION OF WESTERN OUTDOOR CLUBS

25.
CITIZENS FOR BALANCED GROWTH (Washington St. Initiative 547)

ISSUE
Unplanned growth is resulting in the loss of farm and forest lands, declining fish populations, polluted air and water, loss of ecological diversity, loss of valuable wetlands, threats to Puget Sound, wasteful and uncoordinated development of roads, sewers, water and other services to sprawling developments, destabilization of established neighborhoods and communities, and divisive conflicts over land use and the future of communities.

The adoption of state land use goals expressing our common policies and the creation of a fair and open planning process that will allow citizens and local governments to find the means adapted to their circumstances for achieving these state policies in local land use plans and implementing regulations is in our best interest.

STATUS

In just eleven weeks, Citizens for Balanced Growth gathered 229,000 signatures for the Keep Washington Livable growth management initiative.  This is the 5th largest number of signatures ever gathered on an initiative in the history of Washington state.

Initiative 547 has been endorsed by The Mountaineers, the National Audubon Society and several local Audubon chapters, the Washington Environmental Council, the Puget Sound Alliance, the Sierra Club -- Cascade Chapter, the Washington Wilderness Coalition, the Northwest Fly Anglers, the Washington Fly Fishing club, Washington Native Plant Society, Heart of America NW, Association of Bainbridge Communities, Bothell Neighborhoods Association, Alki Community Council, Kangley Rural Association, and many other local community and environmental organizations.

WHAT TO DO

The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs endorses the efforts of Citizens for Balanced Growth to enact Initiative 547 and urges its members in the state to work actively for passage of the initiative on the November 1990 general election ballot
