FEDERATION OF WESTERN OUTDOOR CLUBS

NATIONAL TRAIL PLAN INCLUDING COMPUTER GENERATED MAPS

The National Park Service is developing a national trail plan.  Washington State recently completed its state trail plan that includes excellent computer generated Geographic Information System (GIS), maps, Washington State's computer generated map is one of the first state trail plans using computer mapping.

A computer mapping system, GIS, allows for more frequent updates, easier sharing of trail map information and can be used by local communities to print their trail maps.

In 1982 Congress directed the Secretary of Interior to prepare a national trail plan including trails on all lands and considering the needs of all trail users.

The National Trail Plan for Oregon, Washington and Idaho is to be completed by 1993.  Other western states are yet to be scheduled.

The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs recommends the National Trail Plan include computer generated, GIS, maps that are compatible with Washington State's computer generated, GIS, maps.

The Federation further recommends a more timely computation by 1994 of the National Trail Plan including maps and trail links to Canada's and Mexico's trail systems.
