FEDERATION OF WESTERN OUTDOOR CLUBS

1992 FWOC RESOLUTION #10

_RULES FOR WILDERNESS ETHICS AND BACK-COUNTRY USE_

In recognition of the increasing human impact on wilderness and backcountry areas, the Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs recommends for consideration by its member clubs the following suggested back-country use rules:
1.   Obtain back-country permits as required; where required register parties in advance.
2.   Trip leaders should familiarize themselves with and follow any special requirements for each area.
3.   Limit party to a maximum of twelve.
4.   Stay on established trails; do not cut switchbacks.
5.   Camp in established campsites when available.
6.   Properly dispose of human waste.
7.   Use a camp stove instead of building a fire.
8.   Wash well away from camps and water sources.
9.   Leave natural features undisturbed.
10. Keep wildlife healthy, do not feed them.  Leave pets at home.
11. Pack out all litter.
