FEDERATION OF WESTERN OUTDOOR CLUBS

1997 FWOC Resolution No. 12:

SOLAR ENERGY COMPLEX ON THE NEVADA TEST SITE

The Nevada Test Site lies north of Las Vegas in the Mojave Desert in an area which has more than 330 days of sunshine per year.  From the late 1940's until recently the site was used for the testing of nuclear weapons, both above ground and below ground.  At present its future is undecided and uncertain.  Because of the contamination, the site is unsuitable for many uses.
Senator Dick Bryan of Nevada has proposed using the test site for a large solar energy complex to supply energy for the increasing demands of the growing Southwest.  This energy would be both renewable and non-polluting, allowing less dependence on hydro-power, nuclear power plants, and fossil fuels.

The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs strongly supports the idea of establishing a solar energy research and development complex at the Nevada Test Site.
