FEDERATION OF WESTERN OUTDOOR CLUBS

1997 FWOC Resolution No. 14:

OPPOSE 'QUINCY LIBRARY GROUP' LEGISLATION

The 'Quincy Library Group' bill was passed by the House of Representatives in June, 1997, and will be taken up by the Senate in September of 1997 as S. 1028 authored by Senator Diane Feinstein of California.  This bill uses the misleading term "forest health" to greatly increase logging on one third of the national forests in the Sierra Nevada.  The project will cover 2.5 million acres and double current levels of logging with a huge network of "fuel breaks."  If passed, the project will continue for five years with inadequate scientific oversight and other controls.  Although the project is touted as a local solution, nearly all of the small environmental groups in the Sierra Nevada oppose it because of projected effects on wildlife, soils and water, and the diversion of funds from important Sierra Nevada forest projects such as prescribed burning.
The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs strongly opposes S. 1028, the "Quincy Library Group" legislation.
