FEDERATION OF WESTERN OUTDOOR CLUBS

RESOLUTION #7: MARINE PROTECTED AREAS IN PUGET SOUND (Friends of Discovery Park, Nancy Kroening)

The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs applauds the action of the Washington Department of Wildlife in adopting a formal Marine Protected Area Policy in 1998 and urges citizens, public officials, and elected officials to cooperate in developing a large system of such areas in the waters of Puget Sound.
Several species of native salmon in the Pacific Northwest are proposed for listing as endangered species under the Endangered Species Act.  The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is encouraging entities to work together to create adequate "habitat management sanctuaries" within the Puget Sound Estuary.  Sanctuaries should include the regulation of activities by beach users, prohibition of fishing or marine organism collection, and protection of upland areas from pollution.

Please contact: Write Governor Gary Locke, Olympia, WA 98504 and Seattle Mayor Paul Schell, Seattle, WA 98104 to support the designation of marine sanctuaries in Puget Sound.
