RES. NO. 16:  SUPPORT WILDERNESS PROTECTION FOR SEQUOIA/KINGS CANYON NATIONAL PARK

BACKGROUND:

Most of the backcountry of Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Park was added to the Wilderness System in 1984. In 2008 legislation was introduced to add the rest of the backcountry of the National Park that qualifies to the Wilderness System. The current wilderness proposal includes approximately 115,000 acres including one of the largest Giant Sequoia groves found in the park, the Mineral King area, and the Hockett Plateau. The Hockett Plateau and the Mineral King portion of the proposed wilderness would be called the John Krebs Wilderness. John Krebs, a former member of Congress, was instrumental in passing legislation adding the Mineral King area to the park. The Mineral King area had been proposed as a destination resort and large ski area by the Forest Service.

RESOLUTION:

The FWOC strongly supports wilderness designation for the remaining portions of Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Park that meet the definition of wilderness in the Wilderness Act of 1964.
