SANTINI MINING SUPREMACY BILL AND MINING IN NATIONAL RECREATION AREAS | |
|
The Santini Mining
Supremacy Bill (H.R. 3364) would authorize the Secretary of Interior to
allow nearly unlimited mining access and leasing on any and all federal
lands, including those lands which have received protection in the
past. The bill would also extend the deadline for staking new
mining claims in wilderness areas from 1984 to 1994. Another
threat to protected lands comes from a decision of the Department of
Interior to allow mining in five National Recreation Areas. The
Santini Bill and the actions of the Department of Interior threaten the
integrity of the National Park System and of the entire National
Wilderness Preservation System. |
|
The Federation of Western Outdoor
Clubs urges the defeat of the Santini Mining Supremacy Bill and any
similar measures, and opposes the opening of our protected lands to
mining activities. |
