EAGLES NEST
WILDERNESS ACT |
|
|
Denver Water Board
officials are seeking a Presidential "variance" or a Congressional
amendment to an existing wilderness law, in order to construct a major
water diversion project within the magnificent 133,000 acre Eagles Nest
Wilderness in Colorado. |
|
The project would be
highly destructive of wilderness, undisturbed watersheds, and
irreplaceable wildlife habitat of such wilderness-dependent species as
bighorn sheep, elk, bald eagles, and others. |
||
The Eagles Nest is one of
the most popular and heavily used Wilderness Areas in Colorado and the
United States, and is an ideal urban wilderness since it is only 60
miles from Denver. |
||
Development of the water
project within the Wilderness would not be in the national interest,
would set a bad precedent for local-interest exploitation and
destruction of other irreplaceable wilderness areas, and would ignore
suitable alternatives. |
||
The Federation
of
Western Outdoor Clubs expresses its strong opposition to a Presidential
variance or an amendment to the Eagles Nest Wilderness Act
(P.L.-94-352) to authorize a water development project in the Eagles
Nest Wilderness. |
