No. 11 |
SUSTAINED YIELD AND
MULTIPLE USE IN NATIONAL FORESTS |
|
|
The Multiple Use/Sustained
Yield Act (1960) and the National Forests Management Act (1976)
directed that the national forests be managed for sustained production
of all of the multiple uses and resources. Outdoor recreation and
wilderness watershed, fish, range and wildlife were to receive equal
consideration with timber production. The Forest Service has been
falling far short of meeting many of the objectives of these
acts. Timber production quotas have remained the predominant
objective in forest management, other uses are consistently
subordinated to increasing the timber yield. The F.W.O.C.
reaffirms its support for true multiple use management of the forests
as specified in the Multiple Use/Sustained Yield and National Forests
Management Acts. |
|
The Federation,
furthermore, supports the principle of sustained yield harvests, with
departures allowed only when they meet overall multiple use objectives. |
