COMMERCIALISM IN
STATE PARKS |
|
|
In the present and growing
financial austerity in government, The California State Department of
Parks and Recreation has embarked on a program of inviting
concessionaires to take over some of the functions of the park staff
instead of increasing fees. Once such a program is instituted it
can expand. Under this plan, the initial implementation was the
granting of liquor licenses in several state park units in California. |
|
On the national park
level, Interior Secretary Watt has declared his intent to expand the
use of concessionaires to provide services instead of using park staff. |
||
We recognize that many services are provided by concessionaires in the national and park systems of the several states. However, the current level of such activity ought not be increased and wherever possible be reduced. | ||
Therefore, the Federation
of
Western Outdoor Clubs opposes all further expansion of commercialism in
regional, state and national parks and advocates its reduction.
Furthermore, commercial operations by concessionaires, if not closely
regulated, can be damaging to local environmental values. |
