URBAN PARKS |
|
|
Interior Secretary Watt
has stated that he is ending the Urban Parks program; saying the
nation's parks are already too big and have lands, including part of
the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, that are not worthy of
federal protection. Since open space is disappearing at a very
rapid rate, the opportunities for park acquisitions will be lost
forever. There is a great need for urban parks to be established
in many states near large population centers. Such parks would be
accessible to city people limited means. The Federation urges our
congressional representatives to oppose all efforts to halt this
country's Urban Parks program and to continue their support of the
allocation of funds for the acquisition of urban national recreation
areas. |
