SANTA MONICA MOUNTAIN
NATIONAL RECREATION AREA |
|
Congress created the Santa
Monica Mountain National Recreation Area in 1978 with the idea that
eventually it would include 150,000 acres. Of the 40,000 acres
which the National Park would buy, only 3000 have been acquired.
Already 36,000 acres are in public ownership - Malibu State Park,
Topanga State Park, Point Mugu State Park. The area is unequaled
for its variety of visitor use potential. It includes mountains,
tide pools, salt marshes, canyons and coastal waters, provides for
diverse plant and wildlife populations of which many are endangered
species. |

Intense development
pressures are invading designated park land still unpurchased.
Interior Secretary Watt has said that all money for buying park land
should be cut this year, but the House and Senate conferees voted to
restore $51 million to be distributed on a pro rata basis to all 28
National Park units. Of the total cuts of $14.7 million, the
S.M.M.N.R.A. received a disproportionate cut of $14.2 million. |

The Federation of
Western Outdoor
Clubs urges that the completion of land acquisition for the Santa
Monica National Recreation Area be expedited. |
