WHITE RIVER |
|
The White River, a
tributary of the Green River with headwaters in the Colorado Rockies,
flows through the oil shale region of Utah and Colorado. The
State of Utah and a Conservancy District of Colorado have plans to
impound waters behind dams on the White River in order to encourage
speculation and development of the oil shale resources. Such
development would upset the ecology of wildlife including deer, beaver,
numerous raptors, abundance of songbirds, reptiles, native fish and
natural cottonwood forest. |
||
Half of Utah's opportunity
for nature study and recreation would be lost by flooding the canyons
and curtailing scenic and recreational values provided by a free
flowing river. |

The Federation of
Western Outdoor
Clubs opposes construction of dams on the White River in Colorado and
Utah, as a double threat to the environment, both caused by dams and
the proposed use of the impounded water. |
