No. 36 |
NO MOTORIZED RAFTS IN
GRAND CANYON |
|
|
Senator Orin Hatch's
amendment to the Interior Appropriation bill would prohibit the
National Parks Service from spending any money to implement that part
of the Grand Canyon Management plan calling for a reduction in usage by
motorized craft. |
|
The National Park
Service's "oars-only" plan to phase out motorized rafting over a
five-year period was, in effect, vetoed by the Hatch amendment, and by
Secretary Watt's announcement that he wants to leave the motors on the
river. Since appropriations are voted each year, funding for the
"oars only" bill could again be made available, unless a similar
prohibiting measure is passed. |
||
An "oars only" plan to
phase out motorized rafting in the canyon is the ecological and
aesthetic way to enjoy the river, its aeon-old cliff carvings, its
wildlife, and its quietude. |
||
The Federation of
Western Outdoor
Clubs opposes the use of motorized rafts in the Grand Canyon, and
future attempts at crippling amendments to the Interior Appropriations
bill. |
