INTEGRITY OF HIKING
TRAILS ON MT. TAMALPAIS |
|
|
There is increasing
pressure by equestrians and bikecyclists to use the hiking trails on
public lands in a manner not intended. For example, the narrow
foot paths of Mt. Tamalpais (California) State Park and the Marin
Municipal Water District on the north sided of the mountain, are now
under heavy attack by local equestrian groups. Where equestrians
have 125 miles of access road and 29 miles of trail available to them,
hikers have only 80 miles of trails available to them in the same area. |
|
Horse use is destructive
to the footpaths of this region because of the highly erodable
soil. Droppings make hiking trails unattractive. When a
hiker encounters a horse or a bike rider he has no where to go except
into the poison-oak infested chaparral. It would not be desirable
to widen and engineer the trails for horse use. |
||
Therefore, the Federation of
Western Outdoor
Clubs supports the Tamalpais Conservation Club in its effort to
maintain the integrity of the hiking trails on Mt. Tamalpais in Marin
County, California. |
