No. 44 |
DECLARATION OF
SECRETARY WATT |
When in the course of environmental events it becomes necessary for the people to take action against an ecological illiterate in government service, they should first set forth their list of grievances. | |
Accordingly, the Federation of
Western Outdoor
Clubs, (whose 41 affiliated clubs combined membership number over
300,000) at its 50th Annual Convention, has drawn up the following
grievances against James Watt, Secretary of the Interior: |
He has threatened to expand
concessions in the National Parks and to give these commercial
interests a part in Park management.
He has publicly threatened
to fire civil servants in the Park Service who resist his policies.
He proposes to cut funds
for land acquisition for new national parks.
He has stated his intention
to reduce national urban parks.
He has advocated oil and
gas offshore drilling contrary to law.
He proposed to gut the
Endangered Species Act by devious definitions of key features of the
Act.
He announced his intention
to permit Off Road Vehicles (ORV's) in National Parks.
He has hampered the
enforcement of the Strip Mining Act by firing essential personnel.
He attempted to permit the
bombing of the Bob Marshall Wilderness for oil exploration.
