NATIONAL FOREST MANAGEMENT PLANS | |
|
||
|
In Washington, Montana,
Idaho, Oregon and elsewhere throughout the West we are heavily engaged
in the forest planning process through which each National Forest is
preparing a forestwide plan by 1983. Already in Montana three
draft forest plans have been issued, and one draft plan has been
released in Idaho for the Targhee Forest. These forest plans are
unacceptable from a conservation standpoint. In most cases
accelerated timber cutting will require new roads thus doubling or
tripling the existing road systems within the next ten to fifty
years. These road systems will virtually wipe out the existing
elk and other wildlife security cover located outside of protected
wilderness areas. In addition, high commodity options are being
chosen at the expense of wildlife, recreation, and wilderness. |
|
Therefore, the Federation
of Western
Outdoor Clubs opposes the trend in the contents of these draft
proposals of the Forest Management Plan. |
