STATEWIDE WILDERNESS LEGISLATION
|
||
|
The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs continues to advocate protection of wilderness areas by additional statewide wilderness bills. Unfortunately, many of these bills are favorably received in the House, but are held without action in the Senate, in the Energy and Natural Resources Committee. One example is the California Wilderness Bill, which has passed the House twice, but still languishes in the Senate. The Federation urges that Senate hearings be held on the California Wilderness Bill and others which have been delayed.
In addition to the above,
however, the Federation expresses concern that some of the wilderness
bills proposed, e.g., the Wyoming Wilderness bill, have serious
deficiencies, such as insufficient acreage set aside for wilderness and
the inclusion of "hard release" language, which would prohibit forever
further consideration of released land for future wilderness
status. Therefore, the Federation, while still supporting the
concept of statewide wilderness bills, urges that all such bills be
environmentally acceptable and not include such deficiencies. |
