MARINE SANCTUARIES | |
Under the 1972 Marine
Protection Research and Sanctuaries Act, marine sanctuaries comparable
to national parks are to be established. Under the provisions of
the Act several potential sites have been identified and include: |
1. Washington
State Nearshore Marine Sanctuary, encompassing a series of habitats
representing the extraordinary diversity of marine communities found
within the Puget Sound ecosystem.
2. Western
Washington Outer Coast from Duntz Rock (north of Tatoosh Island) to
Point Grenville, 90 miles southward along the coast.
3. Willapa Bay
in the State of Washington extending along the coast, offshore to
twenty fathoms, down to the Columbia River, since the river has a major
influence on the bay.
4. The Oregon
site proposed is the Heceta-Stonewall Banks off the coast. This
is a highly productive and valuable fishery as well as an important
research site for nearby academic institutions.
5. California
locations identified are Trinidad Head Area, Morro Bay, Santa Barbara
Basin, San Nicolas and San Clemente Islands, and the Cortes and Tanner
Banks.
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs endorses the selections and urges the establishment of
these marine sanctuaries. |
