OIL SUPERPORT AND CONNECTING PIPELINES | |
|
||
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs in its 1979 and 1981 conventions noted that proposals for
construction of an oil superport and connecting pipelines for the
transshipment of oil were ill-advised, and it called upon Congress, the
Administration, and the State of Washington to reject the port-pipeline
applications. Washington State, by final action of Governor
Spellman, has recently rejected the proposal of the Northern Tier
Pipeline Corporation to construct a transshipment pipeline under Puget
Sound. As a result, Northern Tier has recently revived its
earlier proposal to construct the pipeline around the southern end of
the Sound. This proposal in no way mitigates the problems with
any port-pipeline and associated petrochemical facilities that were
identified earlier, including the question of need and the adverse
impact on natural resources and the environment. |

The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs accordingly reiterates its request that all local, state
and federal agencies and governing bodies reject any major west coast
oilport-crude oil pipeline transshipment proposal and support more
energy efficient alternatives. |
