FEDERATION OF WESTERN OUTDOOR CLUBS

No. 25

RECREATIONAL POTENTIAL OF ABANDONED RAILROAD                    RIGHTS-OF-WAY

Experience has shown that abandoned railroad rights-of-way can be converted to many uses, one of which is for recreational trails.  The need for a wide variety of recreational trail facilities is increasing as our population  increases.  The State of Washington has acquired 212.95 miles of the abandoned Milwaukee Road right-of-way and a committee has been appointed to consider its recreational values and possible futures uses.  These uses of the Milwaukee Railroad right-of-way are not foreseeable at this time, but are of such significance that the right-of-way should remain in public ownership.

Therefore, the Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs recommends that high priority be given to recreation trail uses, such as hiking, jogging, bicycling, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing, on the state-owned right-of-way obtained from the Milwaukee Railroad.  Furthermore, the Federation encourages other states to examine and evaluate the recreational potential of abandoned railroad rights-of-way before allowing them to pass out of public ownership.
