RECREATIONAL POTENTIAL OF ABANDONED RAILROAD RIGHTS-OF-WAY | |
|
||
Experience has shown that
abandoned railroad rights-of-way can be converted to many uses, one of
which is for recreational trails. The need for a wide variety of
recreational trail facilities is increasing as our population
increases. The State of Washington has acquired 212.95 miles of
the abandoned Milwaukee Road right-of-way and a committee has been
appointed to consider its recreational values and possible futures
uses. These uses of the Milwaukee Railroad right-of-way are not
foreseeable at this time, but are of such significance that the
right-of-way should remain in public ownership. |
||
|
Therefore, the Federation
of Western
Outdoor Clubs recommends that high priority be given to recreation
trail uses, such as hiking, jogging, bicycling, horseback riding, and
cross-country skiing, on the state-owned right-of-way obtained from the
Milwaukee Railroad. Furthermore, the Federation encourages other
states to examine and evaluate the recreational potential of abandoned
railroad rights-of-way before allowing them to pass out of public
ownership. |
