WILD AND SCENIC RIVERS IN COLORADO | |
|
||
Outstanding segments of
the Elk, Encampment, and Gunnison Rivers in Colorado were carefully
studied and tentatively recommended several years ago by their
respective administering authorities -- the U.S. Forest Service and the
National Park Service, in conjunction with the Colorado Department of
Natural Resources -- for National Wild and Scenic River status.
No further administrative action has been taken on these excellent
proposals, although there has been adequate time. These rivers in
their free-flowing condition provide Americans with substantial
fishing, floating and other recreational uses, and lack economically
feasible water projects that might be developed. |
||
Although Colorado
possesses a number of outstanding free-flowing rivers, they are
disappearing fast behind dams, impoundments and diversions; meanwhile,
to date, not a single mile of river in Colorado has been granted
protective National Wild and Scenic River status. |

The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs urges the Colorado Congressional Delegation to introduce
and actively support legislation to set aside appropriate reaches of
Elk, Encampment, and Gunnison Rivers as components of the National Wild
and Scenic Rivers System. |
