TRAIL USER INFORMATION SYSTEM | |
|
||
A computerized Trail User
Information System (TUIS) has been developed by the University of
Washington in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service, the National
Park Service, the Washington State Interagency for Outdoor Recreation,
and interested volunteers. TUIS contains 70-80 data elements per
trail for approximately 600 trails in two National Forests and three
National Parks in the Puget Sound area, and programming is completed
for batch operation of annually updated data base. TUIS will be
extremely valuable in the next few years for: |
||
1. Replacing
the outmoded trail inventory used by the Forest Service,
|
||
2. Assisting
the National Park Service in developing trail management plans,
|
||
3. Satisfying
the demand for trail information from the owners of personal home
computers,
|
||
4. Providing
the administrative mechanism to monitor and promote volunteer
participation in the stewardship of recreational trail resources, and
|
||
5.
Complimenting the services of retail recreation equipment
establishments by providing customers with current trail information.
|
||
Therefore, the Federation
of Western
Outdoor Clubs encourages the U.S. Forest Service and the National Park
Service to undertake the further development of the Trail User
Information System, which would enable trail users to more readily
obtain information about recreation trail opportunities. In this
way areas throughout the United States could use the same design
concept as a base for a trial inventory for both users and
managers. Thus each areas system could have the potential
for eventually becoming a component in a nationwide overall system. |
