ADMINISTRATION OF THE NATIONAL PARKS | |
The present
administration's policies regarding our national parks and refuges pose
internal and external threats of environmental damage to their natural
and scenic resources: |
1. elimination
of Clean Air and clean water protection
2. permitting
snowmobiles, off-road vehicles and air transportation in national parks
3. permitting
strip mining within view of national parks
4. permitting
geothermal activity, oil and gas leasing and other mining operations on
the borders or within national parks and refuges
5. failure to
halt or diminish motorized craft (in Grand Canyon)
6. failure to
maintain safe park facilities essential to visitor use - roads,
bridges, buildings, sewers, etc.
7. encouraging
the turn-over of national park services to concessioners
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs admonishes the Secretary of Interior to carry out the
mandate of the National Parks enabling legislation that the parks "must
be maintained in absolutely unimpaired form for the use of future
generations as well as those of our own time; that they are set apart
for the use, observation, health and pleasure for the people; and that
the national interests must dictate all decisions affecting public and
private enterprise in the parks." |
