NO. 10 | COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE NATIONAL SCENIC AREA | |
|
||
|
The Columbia River Gorge
along the Oregon-Washington border is an outstanding scenic area of
undeniable national significance. It cleaves the high Cascade
Mountains, creating the nation's greatest water gap and wind
tunnel. It spectacular vistas display unique transitions of
climate, vegetation, and landforms: from waterfalls and rain forest on
the west end to the sagebrush and sand dunes of the desert on the
east. Terraced cliffs rising high above the river expose 40
million years of geologic history. |
|
Within the Gorge, over 50
separate local, state and federal agencies attempt to manage separate
parcels or functions. Most have good intentions to protect the
scenic grandeur and the natural and historic values of the Gorge, but
many have worked at cross purposes. Multiple pressures for
uncoordinated and irreversible development of the Gorge are
accelerating.
Long range protection of Gorge scenic, natural and historical values
must be established. |
||
Therefore, the Federation
of Western
Outdoor Clubs supports Senate Bill 627 to promptly establish a Columbia
River Gorge National Scenic Area that would blend best features of the
private and public management and result in coordinated economic
development that would protect the scenic, natural and historic values
of the Gorge. |
