NO. 13 | HANFORD RESERVATION AS A REPOSITORY FOR HIGH LEVEL NUCLEAR WASTE | |
|
||
|
It is now proposed to use
the facilities at the Hanford Reservation in eastern Washington as a
national repository for nuclear waste. At hearings on the
government's environmental assessment held in February, 1983, speakers
opposed to the site called for better investigation of Hanford and
consideration of alternate sites, charging that the environmental
assessment was largely useless. Inadequacies stated were: the
short study period; seismic hazards; possible fractures in the
underlying basalt due to high horizontal compressive stress providing
pathways for radionuclides to escape with consequent pollution of the
adjacent Columbia River and its wildlife, particularly the fisheries
resource. |
|
As a result of the
hearings
the Department of Energy was directed to prepare another environmental
assessment to be submitted for public hearings. Pending these
hearings, sufficient scientific opinion has indicated that the use of
the Hanford Reservation as a repository for high level nuclear waste is
extremely hazardous and quite unacceptable. |

Therefore, the Federation
of Western
Outdoor Clubs joins other environmental groups and 75% of the voters of
the State of Washington in opposition to the use of the Hanford
Reservation as a site for storage of high level nuclear waste. |
