1983 RESOLUTIONS
|
NO. 15 | UTAH WILDERNESS | |
|
||
|
National Forest lands in
Utah total approximately eight million acres. Of these,
approximately three million are roadless aresa and have been studied
for wilderness designation. |
|
The Utah Congressional
delegation has prepared a draft bill proposing ten areas totalling
600,000 acres for wilderness designation but under terms that dilute
and contradict the provisions of the Wilderness act of 1964. In
contrast, the Utah Wilderness Association has carefully studied the
roadless areas, has recommended 1,600,000 acres for wilderness
designation and has developed a substantial consensus of several major
conservation and recreational groups in Utah. |
||
The Federation
of Western
Outdoor Clubs supports the Utah Wilderness Association proposal and
petitions the Utah Congressional delegation to introduce legislation
for the addition of at least 1,600,000 acres of National Forest lands
in Utah to the Wilderness Preservation System under the undiluted terms
of the Wilderness Act of 1964. Further, the Federation
specifically opposes any legislation that would preclude further study
or that would compromise the terms of the Wilderness Act of 1964. |
