NO. 8 |
RESOLUTION ON CAPTURE OF ORCAS ORCINUS | |
|
||
The National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration is being petitioned by Sea World, Inc., for
a permit to capture Orcas
Orcinus,
called killer whales, for use in their various commercial enterprises
for entertainment and scientific purposes. |
||
It is doubtful that the
public would enjoy the activities of these intelligent mammals if they
knew the shock they undergo when forced out of their free oceanic world
into captivity; that many are killed as they are trapped, and once
imprisoned in their artificial containers, most with a few exceptions,
die within two years instead of enjoying their life expectance as long
as 30 or 40 years in their natural habitat. It is generally held
by scientific workers that valid research does not require their
capture. |
||
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs, therefore, petitions the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Agency to deny a permit to the Sea World, Inc. to capture
the orcas for any so-called scientific or entertainment purposes. |
