NO. 9 |
SHELLFISH | |
|
||
The coastal and estuarine
waters of the Pacific Northwest and the shellfish which grow in these
waters are an important commercial and recreational asset. |
||
A fifth of the region's
shellfish growing areas have had to be closed for commercial
harvesting, with additional areas only conditionally approved, because
water quality has been impaired by inadequate sewage treatment
facilities and by the discharge of industrial wastes. |
||
The use of hydraulic
dredging of subtidal clams is an additional threat to the shellfish
resource. |
||
Therefore, the Federation
of Western
Outdoor Clubs urges the government authorities responsible for water
quality, shoreline management, and fisheries to take the necessary
steps to reserve and maintain our shellfish resource. |
