IDAHO FOREST MANAGEMENT ACT
|
|
U.S. Senator McClure
(Idaho) has introduced bill S. 2457, the Idaho Forest Management Act,
in which he proposes 526,000 acres of roadless, public domain, forest
land in Idaho be placed under the Wilderness Act and the remainder made
available for commercial exploitation. This is from a total of
about 9 million acres of such unassigned land left in Idaho.
This is the largest block of roadless land left in any state other than
Alaska. |
A coalition of
conservation organizations in Idaho supports a minimum of 4.9 million
acres be set aside as wilderness in plots of approximately 25,000 to
200,000 acres situated throughout the state. The boundaries have
been carefully studied. As wilderness the land will continue to
provide outstanding wildlife habitat, retain its vital
watershed function, provide true wilderness experience for the greatly
increasing number of outdoor enthusiasts, help furnish the base for the
state's growing tourist industry, and provide future generations a
legacy of virgin land which is becoming nonexistent. |
|
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs supports the designation as wilderness of the 4.9 million
acres of roadless U.S. Forest land in Idaho as defined in the proposal
of the Idaho Wildlife Federation, the Idaho Environmental Council, the
Idaho Outfitters and Guides Association, and the American Wilderness
Alliance. |
