DAMAGE FROM ABANDONED FISH NETS
|
|
Hundreds of marine
mammals, sea birds, sea turtles and fish are being entangled and die in
abandoned fishing nets. New monofilament nets further compound
the problem because they deteriorate very slowly and are called "ghost"
nets because they are virtually invisible. Some discarded nets
are large enough to entrap a whale. It is estimated that 145,000
trawl net fragments are discarded in the Bering Sea and Aleutian
Islands area near Alaska each year. None of these abandoned nets
carry identification of the owners who abandoned them. |
|
Therefore be it resolved
by the Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs that necessary actions be taken by the federal
government, and its appropriate agencies, to enforce existing laws and
regulations which prohibit dumping of nets at sea and enact laws that
require that nets be used which carry owner identification. |
