ON PUGET SOUND POLLUTION
|
|
Puget Sound in the state
of Washington is one of the world's great marine estuaries. Rich
in wildlife, fisheries, and recreational opportunities, the Sound is a
dominant element in the lives and economic well-being of the people of
the Northwest. For many years there has been haphazard
development along its shores and abuse of its waters. Poor
forestry practices and overfishing have created serious harm to the
fisheries. There continues to be a lack of foresight in land-use
planning and too little coordination among the many jurisdictions and
authorities. Despite all of these problems Puget Sound exhibits
surprisingly good health. But it is definitely an ecosystem in
trouble. Positive efforts must be made to reverse the current
abuses and to clean up the abuses of the past. Most importantly,
steps must be taken to plan for the future so that the Sound may
continue to provide a home to wildlife and fish and to provide its many
benefits to the people of Washington, the Northwest, and the United
States. |

The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs recommends that its affiliated clubs in Western
Washington work in concert to draft and ensure passage and
implementation of laws to restore and maintain pristine purity to Puget
Sound including the Straits of Juan de Fuca. |
