KELLOGG ISLAND IN WASHINGTON STATE
|
|
Kellogg Island lies at the
mouth of the Duwamish River where it flows into Puget Sound through the
heart of Seattle's industrial area. It is a 55 acre grassy island
that has survived through the years of the development of shipping
terminals and maritime and other industries. In this improbable
location countless waterfowl, land birds including a heron colony, and
small mammals live their natural lives undisturbed by the surrounding
chaos. Over the years many threats have been leveled at the
island by the Port Commission of Seattle, and by hungry
developers. So far the efforts of the conservation groups around
Puget Sound have diverted them. |
|
However, new threats have
recently arisen and in view of this the Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs urges that Kellogg Island be protected so that it may
remain as natural as possible. |
