FEDERAL IRRIGATION PROJECTS
|
|
Congress continues to fund
such water irrigation projects as the Garrison Diversion Unit in North
Dakota and the Columbia River East High Plateau in eastern
Washington. These projects benefit only a few individuals and in
many cases produce crops of which there are already a surplus.
The cost/benefit ratio of these projects is in some cases as
economically unsound as 23 cents on the dollar, the rate payers and
taxpayers picking up the tab for the difference. |
Over the long term, these
projects are environmentally harmful in that irrigation farming with
its massive doses of chemically-based fertilizer, herbicides and
pesticides, eventually pollutes the soil, the underlying aquifer, and
adjacent streams and rivers, and is a detriment to fish and wildlife. |
|
|
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs therefore recommends that no further appropriations be
made to fund these agriculture irrigation projects. It further
recommends that copies of this resolution be sent to the chairman of
the House Subcommittee on Appropriations for Public Works. |
