GARRISON DIVERSION PROJECT
|
|
The proposed Garrison
Diversion Project is an ill-conceived irrigation project which
threatens to destroy 70,000 acres of North Dakota marshlands and 61,000
acres of grassland. |
North Dakota produces more
wild ducks than any state other than Alaska. Two major flyways
for migratory waterfowl converge onto shallow lakes and marshes which
provide breeding and nesting areas. The loss of birds will be
noticeable in the U.S. and Canada. Also the canals would allow
non-native species of fish to pass into Canadian rivers, thereby
threatening the Manitoba fishing industry. |
|
The Garrison Diversion
Project has a benefit/cost ratio of 50 cents per dollar and would
produce crops which are already in over-supply. The U.S. Senate
restored funding in 1983. New studies are being made by the U.S.
House of Representatives. |
|
|
Therefore be it resolved
by the Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs that no more funding be provided to continue the Garrison
Diversion Project. |
