DAMAGE TO NATIONAL PARKS
Protection of resources
within the National Parks System is being threatened by various
activities within or near park boundaries. These activities
include but may not be limited to the following: |
1. oil and gas
drilling which alters grizzly bear habitat in Yellowstone National Park;
2. geothermal
drilling which threatens thermal resources including Old Faithful
geyser;
3. grazing in at
least 35 national park units which leads to destruction of native plant
population, introduction of non-native plants for the benefit of
cattle, fencing, and development of stock ponds which are inappropriate
within a national park;
4. diversion or
storage of water which alters the free flowing qualities of waters
within the parks and wildlife habitat and ecosystems such as bird and
panther habitat in the Everglades and riparian desert ecosystems such
as those in Zion National Park and Dinosaur National Monument;
5. hunting and
trapping such as the proposal by the National Rifle Association to open
the National Parks System to
extensive hunting and trapping;
6. development of
nuclear waste repositories such as that being studied adjacent to
Canyonlands National Park;
7. commercial tourist
developments such as skiing facilities and sight-seeing flights;
8. campground and
concession expansion beyond the carrying capacity of the park;
9. coal strip mining
and other mining developments adjacent to national parks which threaten
water quality, air quality and or scenic values of the park;
10. any development
adjacent to national parks which impedes the passage of migratory birds
or other wildlife such as the Island Park geothermal development west
of Yellowstone National Park;
11. timber cutting;
12. concession
expansion.
Therefore the Federation
of Western
Outdoor Clubs urges its members to work in opposition to these and any
other damaging activities planned or presently sited in or near the
boundaries of the national parks. The FWOC also requests the
Congress and the Secretary of the Interior to immediately take measures
to eliminate and or prevent these activities. |
