MOUNTAIN BICYCLES IN DESIGNATED WILDERNESS
AREAS
|
|
National off-road bicycle
organizations are applying pressure to operate their non-motorized
bicycles within the National Wilderness Preservation System. Use
of bicycles within designated Wilderness is contrary to existing law. |
The Wilderness Act of 1964
states that "mechanical transport" is excluded from the Wilderness
System. The National Park Service and the National Forest System
have issued regulations that interpret this act to exclude bicycles. |
|
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs supports the exclusion of bicycles from designated
Wilderness and Wilderness Study Areas. |
