FEDERATION OF WESTERN OUTDOOR CLUBS

No. 25
SPREAD OF NOXIOUS WEEDS

Damage is done to the public terrain by the spread of exotic weeds, such as French broom, Cytisus monspessulanus, and pampas grass, Cortaderia jubata or stacamensis, which are invasive in nature.

French broom, Cytisus monspessulanus, a member of the pea family of Mediterranean origin, brought into California for horticultural purposes because of its resistance to drought and its showy yellow flowers, has invaded nearly all of California's coastal open space.  Enthusiastic volunteer effort to remove infestations from Tamalpais State Park and Marine Municipal watershed lands has been insufficient to stem the steady advance of this rangy weed which threatens to completely replace the native flora unless effective governmental intervention is taken to stop it.

Therefore be it resolved that the Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs encourage the National Park Service, the California State Department of Parks and Recreation, the San Francisco Water Department, the Marin Municipal Water District, East Bay Regional Parks, Marin County and all other land managers where this pest exists to take prompt, effective and environmentally sound action to eradicate or control it.
