THE TUOLUMNE RIVER
|
|
There is currently a life
or death battle being waged for the last remaining wilderness stretch
of the Tuolumne River in California. This river flows in
magnificent splendor from Yosemite high in the Sierra to the floor of
the Central Valley. It is the same river that John Muir fought to
preserve nearly a century ago. |
The Modesto and Turlock
Irrigation Districts have submitted plans to begin construction of a
massive dam on the river. If these plans are implemented the
wildlife, the recreational value and the natural beauty of the Tuolumne
will be lost forever. |
|
Legislation has been
introduced into the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives that would
prevent any further development on the river. |
|
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs supports this legislation and urges the California
congressional delegation to do likewise and recommends that the members
and affiliated clubs of the Federation exert their influence by writing
their representatives to save the Tuolumne River. |
