ACID RAIN DAMAGE
|
|
Much scientific evidence
is now available to show acid rain destroys forests, kills fish and
farm crops worth billions of dollars, damages buildings, and impairs
human health. |
Moreover, evidence
demonstrates that acid rain is not only doing substantial damage to
these resources in the Northeast but also is causing destruction in the
Southeast, and its presence is increasing at a more rapid rate in the
West than elsewhere. |
|
Acid rain is caused by
atmospheric changes of sulfur dioxide and nitrous oxide discharged into
the air by industry and automobile emissions. |
|
Existing technology can
reduce sulfur emissions by half. The cost is small, compared to
the broad environmental, human health, and economic damage costs. |
|
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs respectfully urges Congress to enact legislation promptly
to reduce by at least twelve million tons per year of acid-rain
pollutants discharge into the air. |
