WETLANDS
|
Wetlands are important
practically as well as aesthetically. Estuaries, swamps, bogs,
lagoons, salt and fresh water marshes, potholes, bottomlands and flood
plains are breeding and spawning grounds for many animals, birds and
fish important to man. Wetlands are efficient water purification
and erosion control systems. |
|
Our nation loses about
500,000 acres of wetlands a year to development. The laws and
regulations which protect these fragile ecosystems and prevent their
eventual destruction should be strengthened. |
|
|
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs, therefore resists attempts to weaken any aspect of the
Clean Water Act. It urges strengthening it to restore and
maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the
nation's waters and wetlands. It particularly asks that Section
404 of the 1972 Clean Water Act which has been weakened by regulatory
decisions be restored. The FWOC also opposes amendments to Senate
Bill 1329 which would eliminate duck stamp fees and automatic funding
for wetlands purchase. It endorses the original bill without
these crippling amendments. |
