OFFSHORE OIL AND GAS EXPLORATION --
WASHINGTON, OREGON AND CALIFORNIA
|
|
The U.S. Department of the
Interior is considering leasing offshore areas adjacent to the
Washington, Oregon and California coasts for the purpose of oil and gas
exploration. The ecology of these coastal and marine areas is
already threatened by inland development and sources of
pollution. Much effort is being expended at many levels of state
and local government to reduce these sources and their impact. |
People from all over the
Pacific Northwest and the world visit this coast with its many state
parks and one national park. The come to enjoy the beaches, the
forests, the wildlife, to fish and dig clams and to look at the
sea. This area is an important source of tourist revenues and
recreation for the states and local communities. |
|
The dangers to the marine
and coastal environment from offshore oil drilling are well
documented. Poisoned tidal flats, dead and dying birds and fish,
oil-contaminated beaches and oil rigs on the horizon are the potential
legacy of careless appropriation of these resources. |
|
The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs strongly opposes leasing of areas off the Washington, Oregon and California coasts for oil and gas exploration. It is an activity of questionable economic benefit and of potentially severe ecological and aesthetic damage to these valuable recreation areas. |
