1988 RESOLUTIONS
|
_NO.13_ |
|
The National Academy of
Sciences Study in 1987 revealed that 23 of the 28 pesticides most
widely used on fruits and vegetables are potential carcinogens and that
they are ending up in both raw and processed foods and in drinking
water as well. Some 500 million pounds of pesticides are used
annually on California grapes. This poison not only affects the
health of the workers in the field and the consumers, but also poisons
our soil. |
|
Many labor disputes are
over working conditions as much as for wage increases. The
conditions complained about often have not only health problems for the
workers but are also environmentally damaging. A case in point is
the boycott of California grapes by the United Farm Workers
Union. Family health is a major issues, particularly the
relationship between miscarriages and birth defects in farm worker
families and the massive use of pesticides in fields. |
|
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs extends its sympathy to the sufferings of the workers in
the California grape fields and goes on record in support of the
boycott of California grapes because of its environmental
implications. We further reaffirm Resolution 21 (1986) regarding
the hazards of the use of pesticides for food crops. |
