_NO.15_ |
|
Since the introduction of
eucalyptus into California in the 1800's two problems have developed. |
|
1. Eucalyptus has
encroached into natural plant communities in many cases totally
replacing native species.
|
|
2. Flammable fuels
(leaves, bark and branches) have accumulated under these trees which
would greatly increase the intensity of potential wildfires.
|
|
The National Park Service
and the California Department of Parks and Recreation are dedicated to
the gradual removal of this non-native species from lands under their
control. |
|
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs supports the efforts of these agencies when due regard is
paid to environmental concerns such as slope stabilization, erosion
control and restoration of the site with endemic native biota. |
