_NO.17_ |
|
The Clean Air Standards
Act (S 1984) has been proposed to improve the quality of the nation's
air. This act is particularly important because it contains an
amendment that addresses acid rain, a pollutant showing up with
increasing frequency in the mountain streams and rivers of the western
states. |
|
The Act includes the
following provisions: |
|
- reduction of sulfur
dioxide and nitrogen oxide(s) emissions from 1980 levels; - tightened pollution standards for all vehicles as they come off the assembly lines and for the duration of their lives. - the best available control technology on all major sources for 224 air pollutants; - new deadlines and requirements for urban areas that have so far failed to meet health standards; - the establishment of a board for investigation and prevention of chemical accidents. |
|
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs strongly supports passage of the Clean Air Standards Act
of 1987 or S 1894 in the 100th Congress. |
