1988 RESOLUTIONS
|
_NO.23_ |
|
Senators Hatfield and
Packwood introduced earlier this year S 2148 to designate portions of
over 40 Oregon rivers (approximately 1500 river miles) for National
Wild and Scenic Rivers protection. A somewhat more expansive bill
including five additional rivers (HR 4164) has been introduced in the
House. The Oregon Rivers Council has also succeeded in gathering
enough signatures to place on the November ballot a state initiative
that will add a number of river segments to the Oregon State Scenic
Waterways system. |
|
The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs heartily thanks Senator Hatfield and other members of Oregon's congressional delegation for introducing and supporting this legislation. We urge that the five rivers presently included in HR 4164 be included in the final bill to be passed by Congress. The five rivers are: | |
Upper Klamath
Elk Sandy North Umpqua North Fork of the Willamette |
|
It is particularly urgent
that the upper Klamath River, currently threatened by the proposed Salt
Caves hydropower project, be included. |
|
The Federation also
commends the people of Oregon for their efforts to protect Oregon
rivers through a state initiative, and wishes them success in this
endeavor. |
