1988 RESOLUTIONS

_NO.6_ |
|
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs recommends: |
|
1. That the U.S.
Forest Service establish a buffer zone around federally protected
wilderness areas, to prevent logging operations from impinging upon the
ecological integrity of these areas. The sizes should be
determined separately for each area; |
|
2. That remaining
stands of high and low-elevation old-growth, along with other selected
areas in our national forests, be managed on the basis of a 400-year
rotation, and old growth be defined by current scientific data; |
|
3. That the forestry
programs at our state universities require forest ecology as an
integral part of their curriculum so those who manage our forests in
the future will have a clear knowledge of the intricate patterns of
interdependence that sustain forests in a natural state, and to avoid
the grievous errors of the past. |
