1988 RESOLUTIONS

Senator James McClure
(R-Idaho) submitted Senate Bill 2055 ("The Idaho Forest Management
Act"), in which a meager 1.5 million acres are assigned to wilderness
status. The bill also deals with Special Management Areas (SMAs)
which should be a threat to the National Forest Management Act.
The bill goes into detailed timber quotas greater than those in
existing Forest Management Plans. Furthermore, the SMAs would
supersede the Endangered Species Act, the Clean water Act,
the National Forest Management Act and the Wilderness Act. |

The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs rejects the context of S 2055 because it is
counterproductive to the hard-won legislation passed over the years in
the many Wilderness Areas. The Federation reaffirms its support
of HR 1512 by Representative Peter Kostmayer (D-Penn) which proposed
3.9 million acres as wilderness for Idaho and is worded similarly to
the many other wilderness bills in existence. |
