1988 RESOLUTIONS

The United States is
blessed with unrivaled diversity of marine habitats and resources.
The 1972 Marine Protection Act empowers Congress to designate
certain areas of the marine environmental as national marine
sanctuaries. Only seven such sites have been designated since
1972. |

The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs reaffirms its position taken in 1982 that the waters
off the Olympic Coast of Washington State, Cordell Bank and Monterey
Bay, California, be designated National Marine
Sanctuaries. The FWOC further recommends that the waters
surrounding the San Juan Islands, Washington, be strongly considered
for sanctuary designation by Congress as part of the reauthorization of
the Marine Protection Research and Sanctuaries Act. These
designations will help to assure that these unique resources are
preserved as part of our nation's rich natural heritage. |
